Party Camp – 29th August to 5th September by The Game Master (GM)

-————————————————————————————

A warm fire cackles and burns, illuminating a tiny camp nestled in the woods somewhere north of Gherlen’s Rest. Lady, tied to a low hanging branch nibbles at the grass on her feet while Gram snoozes soundly by the fire. Large rocks and tall trees surround the camp, creating an ample shield against surprise attacks and shelter should rain fall.

Pulling the cloak tighter around her shoulders, Sherey rubbed her hands in an effort to keep warm. Still shaken by the events in Gherlen’s Rest, Sherey still couldn’t believe that she made it out alive.

She knew that it was only a matter of time before the Templars found her again, but at least she got to live another day. She looked up at the group of strangers who worked hard to save her and she could only wonder why. After all, she was an apostate, a criminal and the Orlesians weren’t particularly sympathetic to either.

She was very grateful and felt that she needed to show her appreciation in a bigger way but she didn’t have anything to give. Thus, she could merely thank them in the only way possible.

“I… I just want to say… thank you,” Sherey whispered to the group, breaking the silence, “Thank you for saving my life.”

Gilraen smiled, and put his own blanket around Sherey’s shivering body. As an elf, he didn’t feel the cold as much.
“You are very welcome,” he said in a low voice. “My people know what it is to be hunted or misunderstood.”There was something about the girl that drew him. Maybe it was her glorious eyes.
Sitting close, Gilraen asked, “Is there anything you can tell us? Why would a circle mage be on the run from templars? And what exactely is this?”The elf pulled out the vial Sherey had given him.

Gimshar was in a less then jovial mood after the events of the day. And now here, with an elf, humans, mages, and a dog… she couldn’t help but sigh to herself. And seeing Gilraen pull out the vial, she answers his question for him all while the words of badly burned Ser Argus still echoing in her head. “The templar said she stole a phylactery.” Gimshar gestures with a nod towards the vial. “But obviously it is not hers, or they would have never found her. Which begs the question as to just who it belongs to and where it’s intended destination is.” she says, with a slight scowl for the apostate.

Gimshar was still a little shaken that Ser Argus had said that they suspected she was going to bring the phylactery to a contact in Orzammar. The place was the home she had never been, but heard many stories about. She would not volunteer this information just yet though, and instead see how Sherey would fare with her question.

Royce sat by the fire, absorbed in his thoughts. Now that there was time to stop and consider the events of the day, he was increasingly becoming gripped by fear. He had attacked a Templar. He had aided an apostate. An apostate he knew from the Circle, but an apostate nonetheless. And that… that made him an apostate in the eyes of the Chantry. If the Templars figured out what he had done, his leave from the Circle might become an exile. As much as he resented the Templars for the way they had treated his fellow mages, he was quickly realizing that he was not ready to openly rebel against them.

The conversation broke him from his thoughts.

“I did what I could to help a fellow Circle mage, Sherey. We have to help each other, since so few others will,” he replied to his friend.

He looked around at the others in the group. An elf, probably Dalish from the subtle tattoos he bore. Royce had read something about that tradition. A dwarf who was above the surface, an unusual sight. And an armed woman with a hunting dog. He didn’t know what to make of it.

“I suppose there is no reason to try to hide my identity,” he says, gesturing at his conspicuous robes. “I am Royce, a mage of the Circle. Still a Circle Mage, I hope.”

He pauses and looks away.

“I know why I did this thing, but if you don’t mind my asking, why did you all become involved?” he says to the group huddled around the fire. “Who have I been escaping with?”

Since they were doing introductions, Sherey chimed in too. After all, she owed it to her saviors at least. “As Royce already mentioned, I’m Sherey.” Accepting the blanket from Gilraen gratefully, Sherey huddled into it and regarded the dwarf and Dalish elf.

She had never been so close to either before and they were definitely a subject of curiosity for her. But tonight, she was the subject of curiosity.

“As you all seemed to already know, I’m a Circle Mage and Royce… we were friends,” Sherey looked over at Royce and offered a small smile, “I’m sorry you had to get into trouble because of me Royce… To all of you, I’m sorry. I never meant for this to happen.” She said apologetically, especially with regard to Gimshar who had made her displeasure clear.

“I guess I do owe all of you an explanation.” She adds, “As the lady Dwarf says, I stole a phylactery, and that is the primary reason why I’m being hunted. That phylactery belongs to another Circle Mage. He survived the Harrowing, and was to become an apprentice. But…,” Sherey paused.

“They were going to kill him… I don’t know why… But… But I couldn’t let that happen! It wasn’t fair and I was glad I wasn’t the only one who thought that. There were a few of us and we decided to save him, to help him escape.

So… I was tasked with stealing his phylactery and casting it into the fires of Orzammar…That why, the Templars would never be able to find him. Ever again."

Gilraen’s eyes widened. “Are there any who survive the Harrowing who could have been made a malificar during it? Could that have escaped the mages’ notice at first? I’m not too familiar with the process. Do you have any idea why the First Enchanter would want him killed? Any idea at all?” The elf smiled encouragingly.
Then he turned to Royce.
“As for why we,” he noticed Gimshar’s glare. “er, I became involved is simple. I do not like anyone so outnumbered and over matched being hunted like an animal. It’s as if I went hunting deer with a fireball instead of a bow!”

Sherey’s answers and general apologetic manner alleviated Gimshar’s suspicions to a certain extent. To the dwarf, it seemed that Sherey was being upfront, sincere, and grateful for the aid given to her in her escape from the templars, which warmed Gimshar to her though she would not show it.

Indeed, Gimshar could not help but display the surly attitude of a dwarf. ‘Better that then to be all smiles as the Elf was.’ She’d ponder Sherey’s words, especially the part about Orzammar, but she’d first answer Royce’s question as to why Gimshar got herself involved in this anyway.

Truth be told, Gimshar wasn’t all too sure of that herself. Perhaps in the telling she’d find out.

“I am Gimshar Farhig.” she says, with a nod of her head towards her new companions, along with a hint of pride in her voice of her own dwarven ancestry – neverminding that she was a surface dwarf. She gestures towards Gilraen “Now, Ser Elf and I were traveling to Gherlen’s Rest, and all I wanted was a cold drink and a hot meal.” She smiles “And when those templars came in, I guess I didn’t want everybodys’ good time to be spoiled. It wouldn’t be fair to Argold and Trayn, which is why I played the role of the bard there.” She then shrugs “Wasn’t much time to think about anything after that. Gilraen took off after you.” she gestures to Sherey “And next thing I know it was all chaos and I’m struck off my feet by some magic spell and then trying to find you both.” the smile now turns to a frown. “Can’t say I’ve ever liked your humans’ chantry, nor can I claim to know much about the templars either, but if Gilraen was determined to risk his neck to help you escape, then… I guess I would as well. If nothing more then to find out what was so important about you that the chantry would send an entire squad of heavily armed men after you.” She then gestures to Helena “Though if it weren’t for her picking me up, I’d still be with the templars now, and this would be a different story indeed.”

Her frown turns into a scowl and Gimshar looks towards the campfire, lost in thought. Sherey’s words still echoed in her head and Gimshar did not like them. ‘stealing his phylactery and casting it into the fires of Orzammar.’

Royce takes in the replies from the elf and the dwarf, Gimshar. When the dwarf mentions his mind blast spell from the tavern, he grips the charm on his necklace, but quickly relaxes. If she knows it was a spell, the Templars must too. But she does not seem to know I cast it, so they probably don’t either. Better she does not know, I think. Fewer witnesses to testify against me, he thinks.

“Mages do not become maleficarum during the Harrowing,” he says to the elf. “A mage who falls to the temptation of the Fade becomes a possessed abomination, and believe me, the Templars are quick to kill any mage they suspect of possession. Every apprentice fears he will never wake up from the Harrowing…” Royce trails off. Shortly, he regains his focus.

“Also, the First Enchanter does not command the Templars. Most likely the Chantry has a reason to go after this other mage.”

He turns to Sherey.

“I assume he was also an apostate? That would be reason enough for the Chantry to send the Templars after him. However, I imagine there must be something unusual about the mage to justify this risk you have taken.”

Sherey let Royce explain what the Harrowing entailed and what its consequences were. Such secrets that happened within the Circle Tower remained secret on most parts, but in their current circumstance, Sherey didn’t think it mattered to tell the rest of the group how much the Chantry placed pressure on them to be “good”, to “conform” and most important of all to “obey”.

Then, when Gimshar spoke of a spell that knocked her off her feet, Sherey raised a brow. Could it be Royce who cast that spell to protect me? Or was there another mage in the room who had something against the Templars? She wondered. But it didn’t matter especially since she burned the Templars with her spell, she was now officially an apostate.

“He is a mage yes. But I do not know if we can call him an apostate… He is only a child, Royce. Only a boy. How could he have been an apostate? Let alone harm anyone? We were young once, all unsure of our newfound powers, afraid even. But if we were given a chance to live in the Tower and grow, why wasn’t he given the chance?

Also, him going through the Harrowing at this tender age is most unheard of! And he survived! So, why must he be killed? He should be made an apprentice, like all of us! And what I don’t understand is how could the First Enchanter could sit by and allow the Chantry and the Templar to mete out an injustice!" Sherey protested, her eyes fiery with rage.

Helena sits quietly by the fire, one leg resting against Gram, whetting her blade and regretting not having taken a parting shot at that pompous ass Tolois — yes, it would have been stupid, but very satisfying. A subtle smirk flits across her lips as she indulges in the thought.

“I try to stay out of the affairs of mages,” she comments, “but I’m sure the First Enchanter doesn’t have much choice. If the boy is potent enough to pass the tests, then the Orlesian-dominated Chantry surely doesn’t want him in the hands of Ferelden’s Circle.”

Sherey turned to regard the woman sharpening her blade. She definitely had a point about the conflict of power between Orlais and Ferelden, and this time with magic thrown in – it could be bigger than she originally imagined.

“Well, you point out something I never thought about before,” Sherey says to Helena. Then turning to the rest of the gang, she reached out and took the vial from Gilraen, “Thanks for helping me keep it. I was certain I’d lose it. But now, I must get to Orzammar.”

“A mage’s phylactery can only be destroyed by the mage who owns it.” Sherey explains. She holds up the vial and continues explaining, “Destroying it otherwise might have unforeseeable repercussions.”

“As for why Orzammar, I was told that all the glass vials that hold our blood are made from the molten fires of Orzammar. As such, returning it to where it was made must surely destroy it, do you not think so?”

Smiling gratefully at Gilraen, she nods, “Thank you very much. I should like the company…”

Thoughtfully Gilraen glanced about the fireplace.
I think we need to know, right now, who will accompany the lady to Orzammar, and who have other pressing matters to attend to. As I have said before, I will go with Sherey, and I offer my protection. I feel there is something important in destroying that vial. I do not know what it is, but," and suddenly the lithe elf went on a knee before the mage,“I will defend you to the best of my ability. This I vow.”Normally Gilraen was not so quick to align himself so completely, until he had all the facts. But, if truth be told, the mage’s eyes were having a strange effect on him…..

Royce knew only enough about phylacteries to know what the Chantry would use his for should they find out he was missing. Destroying one lay beyond his knowledge, and he decides to accept Sherey’s statement for the time being.

As Gilraen pledges himself to Sherey, Royce regards the elf skeptically. He had never known anyone outside the Tower so quick to jump to the defense of a mage, and it seemed particularly strange for a Dalish, who he assumed would not even care for humans, to do so. Still, it seemed Sherey could use any help she could get.

“Sherey… I would like to help you,” Royce says. “But I don’t want to fight any more Templars on the way. They have already labeled you an apostate, but I still hope to return to the Circle some day. Along those lines, aren’t you going to be found no matter what path you travel on? The Templars can use your phylactery to track you wherever you go, even to Orzammar. If we travel together, how can we evade them?”

Gimshar had been quiet and sullen, which transitioned quickly to amused as she witnessed Gilraen go on one knee before the mage to vow that he would protect her. ‘Does he think himself to be a kind of knight to make promises like that? she thinks to herself ’Or perhaps he just wishes to court her instead.’. She shakes her head. It really didn’t matter, as she knew that she’d never understand the ways that elves… or humans. But then Gilraen asked her directly if she would come along with them. Gimshar half-smiles and looks around from person to person. “I don’t think it is a matter of whether I wish to go to Orzammar, which is a place where, I should mention, that I’ll be about as welcome as you all are. And that is to say, that we won’t be welcomed at all! But I think that I must go with you, as without me, you’ll likely get yourselves all killed and I don’t want that kind of thing on my conscience.”===============

As the strange group around the fire one-by-one pledges to help Sherey, Royce sits back and ponders. Sherey was right. If he wanted to be safe, the best decision would be to go back to the Circle Tower immediately, resume his studies, and pretend nothing had ever happened. And yet, he was reluctant to do so. He had left the Tower to see the outside world that he had been blocked from since he was a boy, and now Sherey was about to set off to the Frostback Mountains and to Orzammar, places he had only read about in his history books. He had cast a spell against a Templar to help her get this far, and he felt twinge of guilt as his friend told him to go home. At last, he spoke.

But.. But you should leave and go back. That would be the right thing to do. I don’t think you’ll get into trouble, the Templars won’t know you’re with me. Neither will the First Enchanter."She looks around the fire and adds, "Yes, the templars still have my phylactery but I did not think they would find me so soon. I had hoped that traveling through Gherlen’s Pass would get me to Orzammar first and after that, it wouldn’t matter if I got caught. But now that the route via the Pass is closed, the only way I can think of getting to Orzammar is through the Frostback Mountains. Now looking deep into the fire, Gilraen answers Helena. “I am Gilraen, of the Clan Valhandria. I have grown up hearing nothing but terrible loathful things about the shemlings. I could not bring myself to believe that every human was such a monster, so I told my Clan Leader I was going to travel about the lands, seeing for myself and learning the ways of humans. My clan was shocked, as you might think, but I cannot judge about something I do not know. I have a journal with me, and will return to my Clan when my travelling time is done.” The elf paused and looked at Gimshar.
“I was lucky enough to meet our dwarven warrior here on the outskirts of the Kocari Wilds. I was being stalked by a wolf pack, and was about ready to face them when Gimshar appeared. Together we put the pack to flight, but I noticed that these were no ordinary wolves. They were larger, braver and had a number of spikes sticking out from their fur. We decided to travel together, and now we are here. I hope to find out more, such as where those wolves came from, and if they have a den mother, she will need to be dealt with. That, however, can wait.”
Gilraen picked up a stick, and poked at the glowing coals, his expression unreadable.

Gilraen picked up a stick, and poked at the glowing coals, his expression unreadable.===============

Sherey sucks in a breath and exhales, a confident smile appearing on her face, “I’m heartened to have met you all. For you have so willingly extended help to a strange… and an apostate.”As circle mages, we are told that leading the life of an apostate is dangerous and it’s better to be in the tower as that we won’t be discriminated against. Perhaps those stories we hear of apostates being shunned are not entirely true.

It’s a risk, yes, but what other choice do I have?"===============

At last, he spoke.“Sherey, I won’t abandon you now. Even if we both become apostates… I’ll see this thing through. What use is safety in the Tower if you can’t leave it?” he says. “We should leave as soon as possible.”===============
